Restored view of Mission Santa Clara de Asis, 1849 from the original oil painting by Andrew Putnam Hill.  Founded on January 12, 1777 by the Franciscans and located on the Santa Clara University campus, the mission was named for Saint Clare of Assisi, who founded the order of the Poor Clares and was an early companion of St. Francis of Assisi.
